Inaugural Worship Service to Bless College’s Leadership April 13

On Saturday, April 12, Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary will formally install Bryon L. Grigsby ’90 as the College’s 16th president. However, the Inaugural festivities of Grigsby’s installation will officially conclude the following day at the College’s Inaugural Worship Service in the Bahnson Center.

With a theme of “servant leadership,” the Sunday, April 13, event will be an interfaith service, pulling from different religious traditions, according to Jennika Borger, the College’s chaplain, who coordinates campus religious-life activities. “This is going to be a completely unique worship service,” she said.

“Typically, the worship services at the Seminary and College are Christian-based services, but this event is going to be a multifaith service for the whole campus.”

Beginning at 10 a.m., the service will be held in the Bahnson Center’s Saal community room and feature faculty, staff and students from both the College and the Seminary. The Moravian Choir, directed by Paula Ring Zerkle, will be featured at the service. Additionally, guitarists also will be on hand.

“The event is meant to serve as a blessing of the leadership on our campus, including our new president,” Borger said. “This is not a formal service, but a more casual event, open to the entire campus, and it’s something we hope will interest our community.”

According to an Inside Moravian news release in February, the Moravian Choir will perform Hear My Prayer by Moses Hogan and Louez le Seigneur (translated as Praise the Lord), a traditional Cameroon melody. The text for Hear My Prayer is listed below.

Hear My Prayer
words and music by Moses Hogan (b.1957)

O Lord, please hear my prayer,
In the mornin’ when I rise
It’s Your servant bound for glory.
O dear Lord, please hear my prayer.
O Lord, please hear my prayer;
Keep me safe within Your arms.
It’s your servant bound for glory.
O Lord, please hear my prayer;
When my work on earth is done,
And You come to take me home
Just to know I’m bound for glory
And to hear You say well done.
Done with sin and sorrow, have mercy. Amen
