Take Back the Night, April 12

A march and rally against all forms of violence. The march will begin outside the H.I.L.L. at 6:00 p.m. Survivors, Take Back Night_0.jpgsupporters and members of the community will march the “Moravian Mile” up Main Street to Johnston Hall where the rally will be held. Award-winning spoken word artist Kyla Jenee Lacey will leadthe program for the evening.

Undergraduate Conference in German Studies, April 16

The Sixth Undergraduate Research Conference in German Studies, co-organized by Lafayette College and Moravian University, will take place at Lafayette College. The conference draws from a wide range of schools, including Brandeis University, McDaniel College, and Swarthmore College, and gives students the opportunity to present their research in all German-related fields, including but not limited to the study of German literature, film and culture, art history, music, philosophy, history and politics. The Moravian University students who will be presenting papers are William Christman, Monick Perone, Shannon Strohl and Elizabeth Lewis.

 

Blue & Grey 5K, April 17th

Race to a personal best at the 2nd Annual Blue & Grey 5K The flat and fast course starts and ends at our historic South Campus. The route will take you along the roads that border Monocacy Creek and Lehigh River before returning to campus. All proceeds will benefit the Blue & Grey Club which supports Moravian University student athletes.

Start time: 9:30am

Entry fees: $25 alumni, faculty and staff, $10 MU students and children 14 & under

Awards: Prizes awarded to top overall male and female and male and female age group winners (top 3 in each category)

Packet Pick-up: Packet pick-up will take place race morning in The HILL parking lot on South Campus beginning at 8:00am.

 

From Costa Rica with Love

Diane Husic, Dean of the School of Natural and Health Sciences, and students Jennifer Francesco ’17 and Joshua Toth ’18 headed to Costa Rica over spring break for a course in tropical ecology. The students said they learned more in eight days than they had in all of their course all semester. Part of a group that included students and faculty from East Stroudsburg University, Gettysburg College, and Delaware University, they spotted 257 species of birds (a record for this trip), 20 species of mammals, and numerous reptiles and amphibians. Faculty shared their expertise in tropical ecology, research models and sustainability.

 

Congratulations Melissa!

Melissa Cheong ’18 is the winner of the 2016 Student Trustee Elections, and her name will be forwarded to the Moravian University Board of Trustees for consideration. “We wish her great success, as we anticipate her serving a two-year term as a full voting member on the University's Board of Trustees,” says USG President Angelo Fattore ‘17.

Thanks go to Michael Kopach '18, Beth Davies '18, and Ezra Rawdon '18 for their interest in this important position and willingness to serve Moravian University and its students and to current Student Trustee, Jonathan Strauss '16 for his service on the Board of Trustees. We wish him well as he concludes his term.
 

Students Attend Mid-Atlantic Writing Conference

Writing instructor Meg Mikovits accompanied students Chris Hassay ‘16, Meghan Cote ‘16, Tori Danner’16 and Savannah Brown ’16 to the Mid-Atlantic Writing Centers Association Conference (MAWCA) held at Drexel University on March 18 and 19. All of the students have worked as Writing Fellows in First-Year Writing Seminar classes.

Mikovits, Hassay, Cote and Danner presented “Transactional Tutoring: Writing Center Pedagogy in a Classroom Context," exploring how undergraduate Writing Fellows can work closely with First-Year Writing Seminar classes to improve student engagement, familiarity with the writing process and knowledge about writing at the college level.

Brown’s presentation, "Understanding Learning Disabilities Within Writing Centers: Strategies to Encourage Students," examined how strategies aimed at helping individuals manage ADHD can be used in tutoring sessions for all writers through the exploration or reinforcement of productive writing habits and executive functioning skills suitable to each writer's needs.

Come celebrate Martha Reid, professor of English, who is retiring at the end of this academic year. Festivities will be held on Friday, April 15, from 4 to 6 pm at Reeves AfterWords Café.
