Statement
Our Accountability
Moravian University will manage, secure, and keep your location data information confidential, except as permitted by the University’s legal right to monitor, log, and review all information stored on or transmitted through all of its technology resources.
What type of location information is collected when you use Moravian University’s technology resources?
The primary source of location data is using the University’s wireless (WiFi) and wired networks. We collect the following information about network use on campus:
- Your username and device identifier(s) (e.g., MAC Address, IP Address)
- Building, floor, and room where you have connected to a network
- Date and timestamp for when you connect to the access point
- Date and timestamp for when you disconnect from the access point
A non-exhaustive list of other sources include:
- University ID card (swipe, proximity, smart card, digital identity) usage data, including location, timestamp, datestamp, card number, cardholder name
- Applications and websites (for example Gmail, Okta, Involvio) often collect information about user connections or access, including the originating IP address of each access request and/or approximate GPS location.
- Class and event attendance
Why do we collect this information?
Moravian University provides many varied technology resources to the community in order to support the University’s mission. The information listed above is collected in the course of providing these services (for example, allowing users to authenticate and connect to the network, or allowing users to access online resources and websites).
For what purposes is your location information used?
- Service operation: Identifiable location data is used to assist individuals who are experiencing technology-based problems and in the course of improving technology services and offerings.
- Academic Integrity: Identifiable location data is used when there are reasonable grounds to believe that a breach of the University’s academic policy has occurred or is occurring.
- Legal/Health/Safety: Data is sometimes requested by law enforcement and authorized University officials to address health, safety, legal cases, or ongoing criminal investigations. All requests of this nature are considered and approved in a manner specified in the Access to Accounts and Information Policy.
- Other Institutional Uses: The University may use data collected through the use of technology services to provide information on space utilization, and to enhance teaching, learning, and student life outcomes. For example, aggregated and anonymized data may be useful in space management, transportation planning, or wayfinding.
When and with whom will your location information be shared?
We will not share your personally identifiable location data without your explicit consent, except in matters of health, safety, where legally required, or when addressing a legitimate business or academic need.
Can I opt out of location data collection?
No, in almost all cases it is not possible to completely opt out due to the nature of the technology. Use of most of the University’s technology resources, such as Gmail, Okta, Canvas, wireless and wired internet, card swipes for dining and residences, and more require the collection of location data by their nature. Certain individual resources allow you to opt out of GPS location tracking using your device’s GPS.
How is your location information secured?
Securing your information is a priority. The University and its business partners use reasonable security measures, including physical, administrative, and technical safeguards to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the location information that we collect and store.
How will I know if this statement changes?
We will provide notice of significant updates.
Who do I contact with questions or concerns?
If you have questions about this policy, please contact the Chief Information Officer.
