Nicole Loyd, PhD serves as the Executive Vice President for University Life, Chief Operating Officer, and Dean of Students. She has been serving the Moravian community for 16 years—she appreciates its members and all our community represents, including our mission and students, the way we care about one another, and how our president and trustees venture to shape its future.
Dean Loyd does not have a stationary office—she works wherever she finds space on campus, often alongside students, faculty, and staff. Before the demolition of the Haupert Union Building (HUB), you could often find her in the HUB—what she recognizes as the campus’s community gathering place, where “titles and job responsibilities somewhat melt away as folks enjoy a meal together, watch an athletic event, and attend programs and activities.”
She was integral in the planning and intentionality of the building. The four-floor, leading-edge facility will centralize many of Moravian’s student groups and programs and serve as the beating heart of campus.
“The building, all by itself, tells a story. The thoughtfulness starts on the first floor with a home to a combined health and wellness center. It emphasizes that the foundation of a student experience is good health and getting help when needed. It’s the foundation of the building—I just love the imagery of that. Then moving onto the second floor, we’ve created a vibrant and engaging space that includes a space for the student leaders of clubs and organizations, the Center for Career & Civic Engagement, a Center for Inclusive Excellence satellite office and lounge, several dining locations with different vibes—one with lots of booths and another with large screen televisions and jerseys highlighting our varsity athletic teams, the welcome desk, and more,” she explains. “Moving up to the third floor, where it gets a little quieter, you’ll find the veteran and military services office and lounge, our resource pantry, Mo’s Cupboard, the staff in student life, a commuter lounge complete with lockers, and a wellness center and prayer room. This floor also has an awesome outdoor viewing area for Makuvek Field and several meeting rooms. Finally, when you ascend to our top floor, you will be treated to amazing views, outdoor terraces, another viewing area for Makuvek Field, a state-of-the-art board room for our trustees and governing groups at the University, including the United Student Govenment and Moravian Activities Council, and a conference center with multiple break-out rooms and necessary catering space.”
Dean Loyd's hope for when the new HUB opens in 2025 is that it will be “a place that creates opportunities for amazing experiences that turn into beloved memories.”
