“I’ve returned with a deeper understanding of my heritage, new friendships, and memories that I will truly cherish for the rest of my life.”

Learning About Our Roots

Briann Baily ’25 was one of 21 students who participated in the Moravian World Heritage Experience in May, and she describes the trip as “life-changing.”Through the travel program, students visited the four sites that make up the transnational Moravian Church Settlements World Heritage designation: Prague, Czech Republic, Herrnhut, Germany, Christiansfeld, Denmark, and Gracehill, Nothern Ireland.

The group was accompanied by President Bryon Grigsby ’90 and Mrs. Lea B. Grigsby P’22, P’26, P’29 and Dean for Spirituality and Inclusion and Director of Moravian Church Relations Rt. Rev. Jennika Eckhaus ’98, S’01, S’20, S’25, L’25.

“I’ve returned with a deeper understanding of my heritage, new friendships, and memories that I will truly cherish for the rest of my life,” Briann says.

Briann graduated in May with degrees in communications and sociology. Her goals for the trip were simple yet powerful: to explore new places, broaden her perspective, and create lasting memories. From the moment she arrived, those hopes were far exceeded. Briann immersed herself in the cultures of each country, learning about different currencies, local histories, and unique traditions.

Herrnhut, Germany stood out as her favorite stop on the trip. Briann says the group attended a church service that allowed her to reflect on the spiritual history tied to the community. Prague also left an impression with its slower pace, welcoming people, and vibrant mix of activities for visitors.

“Beyond the heritage sites, this trip was filled with unforgettable adventures,” Briann says. “From walking the cobblestone streets of Prague to experiencing the peaceful spirit of Herrnhut to learning about the Moravian community in Christiansfeld and embracing the beauty and warmth of Ireland, every moment was eye-opening and inspiring.”
