Moravian University is entering a dynamic new chapter and its commitment to preparing students for the future remains steadfast. Under the leadership of Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Chief Academic Officer Dr. James Scifers, Moravian is launching new academic programs and innovative learning pathways designed to meet the evolving demands of the modern workforce.
In today’s global economy, few sectors are evolving as rapidly as technology and transportation, and Moravian is diving into these growing industries. This fall, Moravian is launching a professional pilot major, an aviation management major, which will equip students with the skills to run airport operations behind the scenes, and an air traffic control minor in response to industry shortages. According to Dr. Scifers, these programs are designed to launch graduates directly into high-paying, high-demand careers right out of college.
Moravian has always been deeply rooted in serving its community. As the Lehigh Valley experiences shortages in social services and healthcare, the university is stepping up to fill those gaps. Building off of Moravian’s master of social work program, which recently achieved full accreditation following its launch three years ago, Moravian is introducing a bachelor of social work (BSW). “This program creates a seamless, accelerated pipeline for students. Those who graduate with their BSW will be positioned to earn their master’s degree in just one additional year, allowing them to enter the field faster, expand their scope of practice, and command higher earning potential,” says Dr. Scifers.
On the doctoral front, Moravian is expanding its research footprint, adding a second research doctoral program, alongside the EdD program in transformational leadership. The doctor of science (DSc) in health sciences program focuses specifically on educating future health professions educators—training the next generation of faculty who will teach future nurses, speech-language pathologists, and physical therapists. “The program fills a distinct, highly specialized niche that no other institution in the country offers,” Dr. Scifers explains. “Utilizing an online, asynchronous learning model, it allows Moravian to train future faculty across the Lehigh Valley and attract students nationwide.”
As the landscape of graduate education shifts, Moravian is committed to offering flexible solutions for adult learners. The university is rolling out new certificate programs, particularly within the behavioral health space, that make it easy for working professionals to build on their education. “Rather than require a commitment to a multi-year master’s program, Moravian is creating three-to-four-course “stackable” certificates,” says Dr. Scifers. “Upon completing two certificates, students may be halfway to a master’s degree, which lowers barriers to returning to higher education and allows working professionals to upskill quickly while building a direct pathway toward an advanced degree.”
Artificial Intelligence is reshaping every industry, and Moravian is ensuring its graduates are at the forefront of this revolution. Led by Dr. Jenifer Norton, Executive Director of Emerging Technologies, Moravian’s AI initiatives span the classroom and university operations, impacting students, faculty, and staff. “Moravian is working to embed AI across its programs and majors to ensure every Moravian graduate is AI-literate, understands its ethical implications, and has the practical skills to leverage AI within their discipline,” explains Dr. Scifers.
These ambitious programs represent the Moravian University mission—innovative, responsive, and dedicated to student success—ensuring a Moravian education remains relevant and impactful for future generations.
