Eyliena Baker graduated from Moravian College last spring, which meant searching for a job under the threat of COVID-19. In early October, Baker accepted a position with Corporation Service Company as a customer service associate for its litigation management team. All of her job interviews were virtual. Baker offers several tips for a successful online interview.
Prepare ahead of time just as you would for an in-person meeting: Research the company and the position, rehearse questions and answers, and be prepared to explain why you are the right person for the job.
Set the stage the day before. Choose a room that will be empty and quiet during your scheduled meeting. Arrange your desk and chair for a plain, clean background.
Do a test run. Sit down and log on to the video platform you are using. Check updates so they don’t pop up on your screen during the interview. Look at yourself on the screen: The lighting should not be too bright or too dim. Record yourself answering one question and replay it to examine what could be fixed.
Choose simple clothing in a color that flatters your complexion; avoid whites and pale shades that might wash out your face. Dress professionally—shoes included—as though you were having an in-person interview. What you wear will affect your mindset.
On the day of your interview, arrive at your desk 20 minutes early. Make sure the temperature of the room is comfortable. Log on to the video platform to recheck the lighting. Turn off phone and laptop notifications and take a few deep breaths. Log on to the interview link 2 or 3 minutes early.
During the interview, remember to look at the web camera, smile, maintain good posture, and advocate for yourself.
