Seminary Return & Learn: Religious Trauma with Rev. Dr. Rose Shepley ’19, ’24
Wednesday, November 13 | 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. (live stream for virtual attendees begins at 7 p.m.)
Lancaster Theological Seminary, Baxter Room 102
Faith communities are invited to an educational and thought-provoking conversation on how to recognize and respond to Adverse Religious Experiences (AREs) and Religious Trauma (RT). Many of the people served in churches come to us with these adverse experiences and traumas and have not received adequate psychospiritual care to help them heal and recover. Using defined terms, current data, and case studies, attendees will gain awareness of AREs and RT and their intergenerational impacts. We will also explore how certain faith doctrines and belief systems can cause an ingrained trauma response loop in the nervous system. The presenter will introduce the Shepley Religious Trauma Screening Tool and provide guidance on how to best utilize the tool in congregational settings.
Rev. Dr. Rose Shepley ’19, ’24 is a dedicated Religious Trauma counselor and educator with Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from LTS. Ordained in the United Church of Christ, Rose currently serves as the senior director of spiritual wellness and inclusion at Bethany Children's Home. In this role, she spearheads the development of an innovative, psychospiritual program designed to support the holistic well-being of youth in placement. Rose is also the developer of the Shepley Religious Trauma Screening Tool, a vital resource for identifying and addressing the complex impacts of religious trauma. With a deep commitment to fostering healing and resilience, she brings a wealth of knowledge and compassion to her work, empowering individuals and communities to navigate the intricacies of religious trauma.
