Yellow Ribbon Program
Moravian College is proud to be a partner institution with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, an initiative designed to help people who have served in the military in the post-9/11-era, or their dependents, attend the college of their choice.
People who have served in the military who are entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) or their designated transferees may receive this funding. Based on Department of VA rules, active duty service members and their spouses are not eligible for this program; however child transferees of active duty service members may be eligible if the service member is qualified at the 100% rate.
You may be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program if:
- You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
- You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001;
- You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
Members of the military should contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to determine individual eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program. Once eligibility has been determined by VA, a qualifying individual should present the appropriate certificate of eligibility to Moravian College (questions about this process can be addressed to Monique Davis, Registrar, at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com). As soon as Moravian has received the appropriate certificate of eligibility and the eligible student has been accepted for admission, Moravian will help facilitate appropriate next steps.
For students who are determined by the Department of VA to be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program (visit http://www.gibill.va.gov/apply-for-benefits/index.html to apply for eligibility), the VA will provide the first $19,198 toward the cost of your education at Moravian College. Moravian College and VA have entered into an agreement to cost-share and cover the remaining balance of your annual cost of tuition. This means that a student who is eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program is able to attend Moravian College without paying any tuition.
Students eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program who choose to live on campus will still be billed for the cost of room/board (approximately $11,000 for the 2013-2014 academic year). However, the Department of VA will send to the eligible student a monthly housing allowance based on the Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the location of the school. At Moravian (18018 zip code), this means you will receive a housing allowance from VA of $1,437/month for the months enrolled. If you use that housing allowance to pay for your room/board ($1,437 x 9 months enrolled = $12,933), the benefits you receive from VA will more than cover your total cost for the year at Moravian College.
Eligible students who are planning on using Yellow Ribbon Program benefits at Moravian College should notify the Admissions Office at time of application for admission.
