Virtual Counseling Sessions

The Counseling Center is committed to supporting and helping students and the Moravian University community through this unprecedented 20-21 academic year. The Counseling Center staff will be conducting virtual counseling services. We are dedicated to providing the same high quality services virtually as in the office. We understand there may be some questions regarding virtual counseling and hope the following FAQ will provide some helpful information.

FAQ

What is virtual counseling?

The primary difference between virtual counseling and traditional in-person counseling is that the counselor and student are in different locations and sessions are conducted via a secure, video conferencing platform. The content of sessions, goals of counseling, and the counseling process remains the same.

Is virtual counseling confidential?

The Counseling Center utilizes a confidential, HIPPA compliant telehealth software to ensure sessions are secure and confidential. The counselor will be conducting sessions in a quiet and confidential setting. It is recommended students do the same to ensure utmost confidentiality. All the rules and regulations regarding confidentiality and privacy that apply to in-person therapy also apply to virtual therapy.

What if I have a roommate or cannot find a place to have my virtual counseling session?

Please let us know if you are having a quiet, secluded place to conduct our sessions. We have identified both reservable and first-come-first-serve spaces around campus that students can use for their sessions.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule an appointment by calling 610-861-1510 or emailing counselingcenter@moravian.edu. To minimize in-person contact, we are asking that students not come to the Counseling Center office to schedule appointments.

What if there is a crisis?

If you, or someone you know is in crisis please contact campus police (if on campus) so the on-call counselor can be notified. If off campus and experiencing an immediate crisis please call 911.

Is virtual counseling effective?

Although virtual counseling might feel different and may have an adjustment period, research has shown that is can be just as effective and beneficial as in-person counseling.

What if I do not want to do virtual counseling?

The Counseling Center can gladly provide community referrals, just send us an email or give us a call. It is important to note that many mental health providers have moved to virtual services, so it might take some phone calls to see which providers are offering in-person services.
