Faculty News & Notes

Letter from the Editor

Dear Faculty,

Happy spring!

We have longer light, bird song in the morning, and the thrust of new green around campus.

I assume you are furiously consumed with the final push toward the completion of the semester and are packing these upcoming days with all that you hope to impart to your students before they leave for summer break or for the next whatever in their lives. I know I feel the crunch of the several events and obligations that crowd the days in my April calendar.

Tracy Hill reminds us that this is Stress Awareness Month. April is also National Poetry Month. So let’s all reach for a little peace and a little poetry. To that end I’d like to share a poem I’ve loved since I was a girl. I’ve returned to this verse again and again because the music and the rhythm lull me to calm with every read. I encourage you to read it out loud, and I hope it takes you to a sweet place away from noise and busyness.

All best,

Claire

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,

And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made

Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee;

And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,

Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;

There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,

And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day

I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;

While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,

I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

—W.B. Yeats, 1865-1939

A Simple Request

In honor of National Poetry Month, please send me a favorite poem—perhaps one you’ve written—that I may share in the next issue of Inside Moravian. Thanks in advance, Claire, kowalchik@moravian.edu

O’Boyle’s “The Goulburn Concerto” Enjoys World Premiere

“The Goulburn Concerto,” a new composition by artist-in-residence Sean O’Boyle, was performed on April 5 at Llewellyn Hall, Australian National University, Canberra, by the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in collaboration with students from Goulburn Strings Project. The Strings Project provides an opportunity for students from the Goulburn Public School to learn a stringed instrument. Under the guidance of mentors from the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium, these young musicians have been working toward this premiere performance of O’Boyle’s concerto with the CSO.

You can read an interview with O’Boyle about this collaboration in Limelight Magazine.

Brill Receives Dondero Award

Associate Professor of Psychology Bob Brill was honored with the 2016 Dondero Award at La Salle University’s Annual Showcase on the Science of Psychology, held on March 31.

The recipient must be active in a field in which the science of psychology is applied, have a record of distinguished service in the field, actively promote opportunities for individuals to develop their full potential, and provide a role model to others in the field through his or her accomplishments. A La Salle alum, Brill was particularly moved by this award given that Dondero was his professor for two semesters of research and statistics.
