 The Iberian Experience

This course, taught in English, will explore how Spain and Portugal, two of Europe’s oldest cultures that influenced entire continents, formed as nations. The trip traverses central Spain where participants will visit castles, museums, palaces, and cathedrals to explore historical places in Madrid, Segovia, Ávila, and Salamanca. In Portugal students will explore Aveiro and Coimbra.

  • Self-Pay Total Cost:  $3,300
  • Your Out-Of-Pocket Cost After Elevate Credit has been Applied (Valued at $2,600 for eligible students): $700
  • For all travelers:
    • Insurance Fee:  $90 charged directly to your Student Account
    • Recommended for Personal Funds: $300
    • Tuition: $796 for one unit; $398 for a half unit

  • Eligibility:  Having completed two semesters at MU upon application. No foreign language requirement if taken in English. SPAN 105 or equivalent if taken in Spanish.
  • Language: English; Spanish or Portuguese helpful but not required.

All the landmarks mentioned in this itinerary will be visited. Some changes may be made in the order they will be visited depending upon the weather.

Day 1: Fly from the US to Madrid. Take a bus from Madrid to Salamanca.

Day 2: Morning class, guided visit of Salamanca, evening music show, tapas and tour of urban art.

Day 3: Morning class, day trip to Ávila and Segovia, night tour of Salamanca.

Day 4: Morning class and visit towers of local cathedrals, afternoon visit to Casa Lis  art nouveau museum, evening cooking class.

Day 5: Morning class and trip to Aveiro, Portugal, including a boat trip in the canals and a visit to the Museu de Aveiro. Spend the night in Aveiro, Portugal.

Day 6: Travel to Coimbra, Portugal, visit the old cathedral, local university, the National Museum and Baroque Library of Sao Miguel. Travel to Salamanca in the evening.

Day 7: Travel to Madrid, visit El Prado Museum and the Royal Palace, night tour of old Madrid visiting Plaza Mayor and Madrid of the Austrians. Spend the night in Madrid, Spain.

Day 8: Fly from Madrid to the US.
