What Is an Internship?

• An internship is a carefully monitored work experience in which an individual has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what they’re learning throughout the experience.
• It’s temporary work that provides on-the-job training and practical experience.
• Internships usually last one semester but can be longer or shorter. Some are paid positions, and others can earn academic credit.

Students can intern in almost any area of study in any part of the country or abroad. Internships often help students get their foot in the door for their first full-time permanent position. Employers use internships as a way to gain a first look at prospective employees.

How to Complete an Internship for Credit

Moravian University students may have the opportunity to earn academic credit for an internship beginning in their sophomore year. To be eligible, students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Transfer students must also have completed at least one full fall or spring semester at Moravian University. Exceptions may be considered with appropriate approval.

Internships for credit combine hands-on professional experience with academic learning and reflection. Students completing an internship for credit work with both a faculty internship supervisor at Moravian and an on-site supervisor at the internship organization.

Internships may be completed during the fall, spring, or summer and may be full-time or part-time. Students must complete the required number of internship hours based on the amount of academic credit they are seeking:

• 2 credits: Minimum of 70 internship hours
• 4 credits: Minimum of 140 internship hours
• 8 credits: Minimum of 280 internship hours

Students are also encouraged to connect with their academic advisor and the Laurie Riley '82 Center for Career Success as they explore internship opportunities and determine whether completing an internship for credit is right for them.

Internship Stipends

Internships often come with real-world hours, but not always real-world compensation. Internship stipends can help with that. Sponsored by local corporate partners and Moravian University alumni, these $2,500 (pretax) stipends provide financial support to selected students completing an internship for academic credit at Moravian University.

Internship stipends are only available to students who are registered for an internship for academic credit during the semester in which the stipend is awarded.

Applications for internship stipends open at the beginning of each academic semester, typically during the add/drop period. Eligible students completing an internship for credit that semester are encouraged to watch for application information and deadlines at the start of the term.

Please Note: Internship stipend funding is limited, and the number of stipends available varies based on funding. Typically, 2–3 stipends are awarded each semester. Applications are reviewed by a committee, and awards are based on the strength of the application materials submitted. While all eligible students are encouraged to apply, funding is not guaranteed.
 

What Is an Externship?

• Externships provide Moravian University students the opportunity to connect with a professional in their area of interest.
• Through an externship, the student is able to experience an organization firsthand through short-term job shadowing and employer site visits.
• The goal of an externship is to help the student make educated career decisions when selecting an industry for their future employment.

Externships typically take place during winter break. Students can register for an externship and review the available sites in the fall semester.

Purpose of the Career Connections Externship Program

The Career Connections Externship Program exists to provide Moravian University students the opportunity to connect with a professional in their area of interest. This program is designed to help students make educated career decisions relating to majors, job functions, and industries. The Career Connections Externship Program also gives students the opportunity to experience an organization firsthand, allowing them to make educated decisions when later selecting an industry for future employment.
