Ubuntu Program

The Ubuntu Program is a mentorship initiative supported by student leadership groups and the Center for Inclusive Excellence at Moravian University. This program is designed to provide comprehensive support for new students, fostering a welcoming environment that eases their transition into college life.

From Tuesday, August 19 to Thursday, August 21, students in the Ubuntu Program will connect with peer mentors, faculty, and staff who will introduce them to campus resources through interactive sessions and networking opportunities. The program emphasizes community-building and personal development, ensuring that students feel empowered and confident as they begin their academic journey at Moravian University.

The program draws inspiration from the concept of Ubuntu, a term from the Zulu language that is commonly translated as “I Am Because We Are.” The African Journal of Social Work describes Ubuntu as “a collection of values and practices that emphasize the significance of relationships, community, and shared experiences in shaping an individual’s personal and academic journey.”

With the spirit of Ubuntu in mind, the program fosters a sense of connection and mutual support among students. Participants will engage in workshops, activities, and reflective discussions designed to promote personal growth, academic success, and community engagement. Through a structured two-day orientation program, student mentors from the Center for Inclusive Excellence will provide guidance and support, helping participants navigate their college experience.

"This program has been really helpful in helping me get around campus and be myself. I never had groups that accepted me to be me. I feel like now when I see some of the people I met in DEI, it’s normal to wanna talk with them and ask how the day is going."

The Ubuntu Program will continue its support during the New Student Orientation (NSO) from Friday, August 22 through Sunday, August 24, culminating in a closing dinner on Sunday. Registration for the Ubuntu Program is due by Friday, August 1.
