Megan Dailey Spotlight
Megan Dailey, Health Professions Advisor and Assistant Director of Advising Operations
What is your role at Moravian, field(s) of expertise, and research interests (if applicable)?
My role at Moravian is multifaceted. In my position as Health Professions Advisor, I assist students interested in pursuing a professional health career. Any student interested in a pre–health track can access my advising services. I build relationships with students, help them learn about various health careers, and develop their path toward that career. I help students understand the application process for their graduate program, prepare their materials for application, practice interview skills, and offer advice as they navigate the process.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The part of my job I enjoy the most is assisting students with their goals and witnessing them achieve those goals. Getting into highly competitive health professions graduate programs is not an easy feat. I am so proud of students when they get into their school of choice, but I am also honored that I got to help them along the way.
Do you have a memorable student story to share?
In my first month at Moravian, I was contacted by a student who was offered an interview for a physical therapy doctoral program. We met for a mock interview, and she had strong interview skills. I gave her some feedback, mostly positive, to help build her confidence. She was admitted to that DPT program and sent me the nicest thank you note. Those are the moments I live for as a Health Professions Advisor. Moravian students have the skills and sometimes just need a little confidence boost to become their best.
Please share something about yourself that people may not know.
I grew up as a military dependent; my dad was in the Air Force. I have lived in seven states and one other country. I think moving around as a kid made me love meeting new people, which drew me to my career as an advisor.
Where is your favorite spot on campus?
The Sally! The building is beautiful, there are always students using the various spaces, and I always enjoy a coffee break at DeLights!
What is your favorite Moravian University tradition?
Heritage Day is my favorite tradition. I have learned so much about various community partners in the Lehigh Valley. It is also nice to come together as a community and give back. As the Health Professions Advisor, I talk with students about community service and learning about the diversity of the community you serve. Heritage Day is just one way students give back and learn about themselves and others.
What activities do you enjoy in your free time?
In my free time, you can find me spending time with my husband and eight-year-old son. I love spending time outside when the weather is nice. I enjoy biking and hiking.
What book, film, song, or piece of art is meaningful to you?
There is a song by Alicia Keys titled “Good Job,” which is a reminder to the listener that they are doing a good job. I get feedback from students going through the process of applying to medical school, dental school, etc., about how hard it is and how stressful it feels. Sometimes it is my job as an adviser to remind them that they are doing a good job and to be a cheerleader for them.
Please complete this sentence: I can never resist a good ___________.
I can never resist a good donut! I am still on a search throughout the Lehigh Valley for the best chocolate glazed donut.
Name someone who inspires you and why.
My mom is my inspiration. She graduated from law school when she was 40 and went on to have an amazing career. Her path reminds me that I do not need to have everything figured out about my life/career right this minute. It is also great advice that I continue to use with my students. I see students today struggling with immense pressure to do it all. As Health Professions Advisor, I try to break down the admission process and steps and individualize my advising service to help build a student’s confidence and success.
Share something that makes you feel happy.
I feel truly happy walking around outside on a warm sunny day. Good weather and moving your body make for great endorphins!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
Not everyone’s journey is a straight path, and no two journeys are the same. I have needed this advice several times in my career and life. I also use this advice with my health professions students. Students get caught up in the comparison game, and I constantly remind them that their path is their own. I love to share statistics and stories with students about others who have non–traditional approaches to their goals.
Where did you go to college, and what did you study?
I graduated from Virginia Tech, majoring in political science and English. I received my Master’s of Education from North Carolina State University.
What would you say to donors who have given to support Moravian?
Thank you! Supporting Moravian students is supporting the next generation of community helpers and healers. I work with a goal–oriented group of students who work hard to become competitive applicants in a highly competitive admissions process. The support of donors is invaluable.
