Graphic and Interactive Design Major, Angela Kilburg '18 places first in National Publication Design Contest

Bethlehem, Pa., May 2, 2016—Moravian College Graphic and Interactive Design Major, Angela Kilburg, has won first place in the Society of Publication Design's National Student Design Competition. She is also the recipient of the National Mitch Shostak Award for outstanding Publication Design.  

In the field of graphic design, this is one of the most prestigious honors a college student can be awarded, and it is an unusual success to win as a sophomore. The design that Angela entered was created in the Publication Design course taught by Moravian's new Graphic and Interactive Design Professor, Camille Murphy here at Moravian College. This course is offered though the Art Department, chaired by Associate Professor Angela Fraleigh

As announced on the Society of Publication Design's Website, Angela Kilburg from Moravian College placed first, Tomas Almeida from Norwich University of the Arts in England placed second and Phillip Smith from Kutztown University placed third. Runners up were from California State University in Fullerton, CA,  Norwich University of the Arts in England, and The School of Visual Art in New York City.The contest winners were also announced on the Society of Publication Design's Facebook Page

Angela's prize includes

  • $2,500 in prize money
  • A summer internship at a top NYC magazine of her choice
  • Inclusion in the Pub 51 SPD Annual
  • An invitation to the SPD Awards Gala in New York City.

"We are very proud of all of the students from Moravian College's Publication Design Course that entered the contest, and of Angela Kilburg and her contest entry, which gives her a wonderful prize and brings attention to the quality of our Graphic and Interactive Design track and Art Department here at Moravian College," said Camille Murphy.

Kilburg is a Comenius Scholar, Emerging Leaders Scholar, and tutor for the Art Department with a 3.92 GPA. She will also be the new student leader of Studio South next semester, the student-run design organization that provides design services on campus. Additionally, Angela is a student member of Untitled MC Arts, is the Newman Association-Vice President, Catholic Relief Services-Chapter Vice President, and is the Dance Company-Costume Assistant here at Moravian College.
