Moravian College's Move Out Week Goes Green

#GreenHoundMoveOut motto "Don't Dump. Donate."

Bethlehem, Pa. May 4, 2016—As Moravian College closes out its 274th academic year this week, the call to action for student "Move Out Days" are "Don't Dump. Donate." That is the environmentally friendly message ringing across campus as students begin to pack-up and move-out after final exams this week.  Historically, students would fill the garage cans and dumpsters with unwanted items as they clean out their dorm rooms. This year, large green bins are placed outside the residence halls for students to collect gently used clothing and designated areas are set-up for food, and furniture donations.

Students are encouraged to donate unopened packaged food, household items, and furniture from now until May 15. All items will be distributed among the following organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Lehigh Valley Outreach Depot/Central Moravian Church, and the United Christ Church Soup Kitchen.

“Our office recognized there was a definite need and opportunity for a sustainable move-out,” said Melissa Andreas '12, assistant director of housing & event management, who helped coordinate the effort, “Each year students dispose of or leave behind items that can benefit members of our local community. After presenting this idea at my first Sustainability Committee meeting, we assembled a team including members of Housing & Event Management, Civic Engagement, FMP&C, and Residence Life who quickly made GreenHound Move-Out a reality.”

"This project is an example of how an idea that germinated from the College's Sustainability Committee became a reality by partnering with multiple divisions, resulting in the college taking steps toward greater sustainability.” said Nick DeSalvo, director of sustainability, Lehigh Valley Association of Independent College (LVAIC). “The Greenhound Move Out is an example of how a college can implement an environmentally- friendly initiative that has a direct secondary benefit to local community. I suspect this will become an annual tradition at the College."

The Green Move Out initiative is sponsored by the Moravian College Office of Residence Life, Center for Career & Civic Engagement, and the Office of Housing and Event Management, and Facilities Management Planning & Construction.
