Academic Standing
This policy is in effect for all students enrolled as of August 14, 2026 regardless of when the student matriculated to Moravian University.
Dean's Honor List: Undergraduate students who successfully complete twelve or more credits in a Fall or Spring term and attain a GPA for the term of 3.50 or higher are placed on the Dean's Honor List.
Good Standing: To be considered in good academic standing, a student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA (2.00 for undergraduate programs; 2.75 for graduate programs at Moravian Theological Seminary; and 3.00 for all other graduate programs). In addition, they must successfully complete, with passing grades, at least 70% of cumulative attempted credits. Courses with posted grades of I (incomplete), F (failure), NC (no credit), W (withdrawal), or WF (withdrawal failing) are considered attempted, but not successfully completed. Good standing is typically reviewed at the end of fall, spring, and summer terms for undergraduate students, at the end of every term for graduate students, and at the end of every term for students in cohort-based programs.
Students who receive financial aid should also review the Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid Policy.
Academic Dismissal: Undergraduate students (including students enrolled in post-baccalaureate programs) who have attempted twelve or more credits, and have a cumulative GPA at or below 1.50 are dismissed.
Undergraduate students who are dismissed may be provided an opportunity to appeal to the Academic Standing Review Board. If they are successful in their appeal, they may need to take additional steps as outlined in the Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid Policy to be considered for financial aid.
Dismissal for graduate students is determined by the individual graduate program requirements. If a student is removed from a graduate program due to academic performance, conduct issues, or other performance issues (particularly those related to professional standards of the program), the student may appeal that decision in writing to the program director (or, where it exists, a student progression committee within the program). If the student is not satisfied with the decision of the program director/committee, they may appeal to the appropriate school dean. If the student is not satisfied with the decision of the school dean (or if no school dean exists), they may appeal to the appropriate college/seminary dean. If the student is not satisfied with the decision of that dean, their final appeal is to the Provost. The student has the right to meet with anyone in the appeals process in person; however, a written statement is required for each part of the appeals process.
Academic Warning: When grades at the end of a term (fall, spring, and summer terms for undergraduate students, at the end of every term for graduate students, and at the end of every term for students in cohort-based programs) indicate that a student is no longer meeting requirements for good standing (see above) and has not been dismissed, the student will be placed on academic warning. The record of a student in a status of academic warning is evaluated by the Academic Standing Review Board at the end of their subsequent term of enrollment. After the next term of enrollment, the student may return to good standing, continue on academic warning, be suspended for one or two semesters with the opportunity to apply for reinstatement, or be dismissed. Students on academic warning who have attempted 24 or fewer academic credits at Moravian are eligible to participate in University sanctioned events (e.g., athletics, band, orchestra). Students on academic warning who have completed more than 24 academic credits at Moravian are not eligible to participate in University sanctioned events.
Reinstatement: A student’s academic standing at the time of exit (e.g. leave of absence, withdrawal, dismissal) will be preserved. Students requesting reinstatement who are not in good standing will need to have their records reviewed and develop an academic success plan in conjunction with the Academic Standing Review Committee and the academic advisor / program director before reinstatement is granted.
